The quarter final concluded with a 1-1 draw in regular time, leading to a nail-biting penalty shootout, where Mara Sugar FC triumphed with 9-8 penalties scored. Goalkeeper Evans Omondi delivered a stellar performance and was deservedly awarded Man of the Match for his heroics between the posts.

Mara Sugar FC’s victory propels the team into the semi-finals. A significant milestone in the club’s history.

The Mozzart Bet Cup, Kenya’s premier domestic knockout football competition, has long been a stage for drama, dreams, and the rise of underdogs. This year, it is Mara Sugar FC who are stealing the spotlight, making a historic run to the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament for the first time in the club’s history.

Formerly known as the FKF President’s Cup, the competition boasts a rich legacy dating back to 1954. Over the decades, it has changed names and sponsors – from the Moi Golden Cup to the GOtv Shield, Betway Cup, and more – reflecting the evolving landscape of Kenyan football. In February 2023, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) signed a KES 60 million, three-year sponsorship deal with Mozzart Bet, rebranding the tournament as the Mozzart Bet Cup.
The competition features clubs from across Kenya’s football pyramid – from the FKF Premier League, National Super League, Division One and regional leagues. The winner of the Mozzart Bet Cup earns a direct slot in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In recent editions, the tournament has witnessed the rise of new champions. In 2023, Kakamega Homeboyz defeated Tusker FC 1-0 to lift their first-ever domestic cup title. The 2024 edition continued this trend of unpredictability, with Kenya Police FC clinching their maiden trophy.
Now, Mara Sugar FC is adding to the growing list of breakout stories.

Starting their campaign in Round 64, the team has battled through each round with grit and determination, toppling more established opponents and thrilling their fans with each hard-fought victory. Their triumph in Round 16 was particularly significant, not only for the quality of opposition they overcame, but also for what it signified: a historic first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals.

The semi-final will take place on 1 June 2025 at 1pm against Nairobi United in Nairobi. Mara Sugar FC, fuelled by belief and momentum, is ready to write the next chapter of their fairy-tale run.

As the Mozzart Bet Cup continues to prove, in knockout football, anything is possible.
